Hilary Gauci

Hilary Gauci’s finely executed still life works, focusing mainly on silver and pewter accompanied by fruits, cheese and nuts, are highly collectable. As a result she is much in demand and her paintings are exhibited in selected galleries across the country including in London.

She says: “I love painting still life using the vibrant colours of fruit and their reflections within silver, copper and pewter. I also paint game birds, eggs and feathers, and old books, parchment and globes. My work is done in oils on a fine linen surface. Over time I have distilled my work down to small, still life portraits influenced by the old Dutch masters and some exceptional modern day still life painters.”

I have tried many different mediums but from the first time I used alkyd oils I was hooked. Their brilliance, depth of colour and speed of drying suited my type of work perfectly. I paint on superfine Belgian linen on gessoed board and the painting is finished with two or three coats of varnish.

I live in the wilds of Aberdeenshire, surrounded by peace and space which creates a wonderful counterbalance against the intense concentration required for the sort of paintings I produce. Still life holds a fascination for me.”

Based in Aberdeenshire, Hilary Gauci exhibits regularly in the North East as well as throughout the UK. Her work features in numerous collections.
