Sally Gatie
Born and raised in North Yorkshire, Sally Gatie graduated in Fine Art at the University of York in 2000. Sally's paintings depict the female figure, gently cradled within a sea of patterned fabric. She works on both large and small scale, using oil on canvas, employing varied techniques, the canvas is prepared with a warm wash of colour overlaid with 'impasto' expressive brushwork.
Sally’s current body of work explores the idea of consciousness, the peace and calm that exists alongside the surrounding chaos. The series is inspired by Sally’s own experience in meditation and her family life in Yorkshire.
The human figure has always been Sally's main source of inspiration; she uses it as a starting point for an exploration of colour, texture and pattern. A fleeting expression or pose is often the inspiration for her next composition. Sally believes that her finished work is a product of both her consciousness while painting, and her developing techniques as an artist. She says: “My working system is always in a state of flux, developing in small steps from painting to painting."
Sally works from her studio in Scarborough’s Woodend and regularly shows her work at art fairs and galleries around the UK.
