Margaretann Bennett

Margaretann Bennett graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1991 and has since worked full-time at her studio in Glasgow. She exhibits in galleries and at major art fairs throughout the UK, and in the major Scottish open exhibitions. She has won numerous awards and her paintings are held in the public collections of St Andrews Hospital, Fife and Princess Margaret Rose Hospital, Edinburgh. Margaretann has constantly pushed the boundaries of her work, resulting in a progressive transformation toward a darker imagery and narrative.

Margaretann says: “My current practice is deeply rooted in the figurative, creating paintings based on remembrance, loss and the nature of human existence. Here I explore themes of the uncanny and gothic – my figures are charged with a dark, tense energy – images that are a world full of decadent, romantic Victorian atmosphere, with ancient mausoleums from fantasy graveyards, where undead wraiths and decaying angel statues blur the borders between nature and supernature. In the world I create through my paintings, ghostly girls may rise up at twilight for dark, unearthly pleasures, bringing decadent passions from their own dare zone. Some of my figures with tangled, abstracted innards on display suggest the body as a mysterious other, surreal and unknowable with a life of its own, and ultimately mortal. This serves as a reminder of our own brief timescale, where we inevitable return through the ether, through nature… the way of all flesh.”
