Cherylene Dyer

Cherylene Dyer graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1998 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting.

Painting mainly in oil paint, Cherylene Dyer uses large scale charcoal drawings as part of her preparation process. She has spent a large proportion of her career studying oil paint methods. Hence she favours both the traditional methods of glazing and scumbling, in addition to modern and quicker painting methods such as wet on wet and dry brush techniques. These techniques, along with dramatic directional lighting make up the basis for most of her work.

Cherylene Dyer specialises in figurative oil painting, with her main inspirations coming from the old masters. She lists Rembrandt and Caravaggio especially as key influences in her work. As a result her figures appear mysterious and ambiguous, centred in their own worlds, lit up as though on a stage. The figures themselves usually don’t look at the viewer although they still demand the viewers attention.

Prizes include City of Glasgow Award, awarded at the RGI annual exhibition. Benno Schotz Awardfor drawing, awarded at the Glasgow School of Art degree show. Nominated for figurativas 13, figurative art prize, Barcelona. Winner of the Glasgow Art Club award, Paisley Art Institute, 2015

Her paintings are exhibited in some of the UKs most prestigious galleries including Panter and Hall, London, and Thompsons in London.
