Winifred Fergus studied drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, graduating in 1984.
Since then she has exhibited widely including the Lost Gallery in Strathdon, Frames Gallery in Perth and Whitehouse Gallery in Kirkcudbright. She is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and won prizes there in 1998, 2003 and 2013 when she won the Gemmel Hutchison Prize. Other awards include the Shell Expro Award —Aberdeen Artists Society, and the John Murray Thomson Award.
She has works in the public collections of Robert Gordon University— Aberdeen, Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Edinburgh Hospitals Art Trust and in private collections throughout the UK and worldwide.
Winifred focuses on wildlife paintings, choosing to paint birds and animals that are common to her environment in rural Aberdeenshire. She aims to portray her subjects in a sensitive, unsentimental way.
